To Encourage the Others - The Court Martial of Admiral Byng
Written and directed by Nigel Pascoe QC
A play, re-creating one of the most controversial trials in English legal history.
On 14 March 1797, Admiral Byng was executed. Ordered to relieve Minorca, then under British rule, he was handicapped by poorly equipped ships. The odds against him were overwhelming. His tactics in engaging the French fleet led to a further allegation of failing to engage the enemy, then a capital offence. So he faced a controversial Court Martial and findings from which there was no escape.
Admiral Byng is played by Anthony Arlidge QC, one of the criminal bar’s most colourful and engaging characters, aided and abetted by His Honour Judge Cowell, Frank Abbott, Richard Tutt, Elizabeth Pascoe and Nigel Pascoe QC.
Tickets: £10 (unreserved seating)
