Joseph Crouch
Joseph Crouch began his musical education as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, and was later a Choral Scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. Here he first gained a love for early music through constant exposure to choral repertoire of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Inspired by frequent collaborations between these choirs and various period instrument orchestras, he went on to study Baroque Cello as a postgraduate at The Royal Academy of Music, under Jennifer Ward Clarke.
After graduating, Joe completed his training as a member of The European Union Baroque Orchestra. This gave him opportunities to perform in areas not normally associated with expensive concert tours, such as the Balkans and the Baltic States, as well as the grander European venues; at the same time it opened his eyes to different “schools” of baroque playing — certainly as much a feature of the twenty-first as of the eighteenth century.
Joe now combines his work with Sonnerie with his orchestral career; he is the continuo cellist with the Gabrieli Consort and the Academy of Ancient Music. Between them, these commitments ensure that Joe is a regular performer on radio, television, on record and the international stage. He is now hoping to give more time to coaching and teaching, and less time to the check-in staff at Heathrow.
