Schubert Die schöne Müllerin
The Alehouse Sessions

Norway-based collective Barokksolistene is recognised as one of the world’s most dynamic and exciting groups working in the field of historically informed performance, fusing virtuoso musicianship, flawless ensemble playing and a unique and engaging style of performance. Long-term collaborators with director, arranger and singer Thomas Guthrie, they present Schubert’s popular song cycle in a version like none you will have heard before! Rooted in the social and improvisatory environment of the songs' original conception, the magical production, complete with life-size puppet, takes a relaxed, accessible and storytelling approach to conjure a strikingly original musical and theatrical performance. The second half features The Alehouse Sessions, an ever changing and evolving insight into the music of the English 17th Century tavern, the concert halls of their era. It will give you a joyous window into this tumultuous period through Purcell overtures and English sea shanties and with Scandinavian folk songs thrown in for good measure.

The performance will be recorded by BBC Radio 3, for broadcast on 24th November.

This concert is generously supported by The Roger and Ingrid Pilkington Trust and is produced in association with Music and Theatre for All.
