Elgar Serenade for strings
Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis
New commission by Laurence Osborn
Bringing a sumptuous all string programme to the fantastic acoustic of Temple Church, the Outcry Ensemble will perform an evening of late romantic music that stretches the possibilities of what a string ensemble’s is capable of. The first half will consist of English music that looks forward and back in history which will be mirrored by the second half in which Strauss’s extraordinary memorial with 23 soloists is paired with a new piece by award winning composer Laurence Osborn, inspired by the music in the rest of the programme.
The first half of the programme featuring Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis was notably recorded by the world famous conductor Sir John Barbirolli in the Temple Church at the dead of night in 1962. The Temple Church was chosen for this recording due to the unique and excellent acoustics and the disc became a best seller. It will be a treat to hear these pieces performed in this setting once again.
The concert will finish at approximately 8.45pm.
