RUSH HOUR CONCERT
Kadialy Kouyate (master kora player and griot)
Kadialy Kouyate is a consummate musician, a singer-songwriter inspired by the West African Griot repertoire. Born into the great line of Kouyate Griot (praise singers) in Southern Senegal, Kadialy’s mesmerising kora playing and singing style have been appreciated in many prestigious venues as both a soloist and in different ensembles.
The Senegalese kora is a 21-string harp with a beautiful sonorous tone, and in Kouyate's hands it becomes an extension of his very soul.
Since his arrival in the UK Kadialy has played a significant part in enriching the London musical scene with his griot legacy. He has been teaching the Kora at SOAS University of London for the last decade and he has also been involved in countless musical projects both as a collaborator and a session musician.
Performance generously sponsored by Dame Kate Thirlwall & Charles Kelly.
Programme to be improvised at the performance, which should finish at approx. 6.30pm.
"Senegalese kora virtuoso and singer Kadialy Kouyaté showcases his fleet-fingered skills on this mesmerizing instrument, complementing it with his hauntingly, darkly beautiful voice."
Time Out London"He effortlessly added staccatoed skittering runs and flamenco-sounding internal rhythms, while his voice moved between deep wistful melodies and drone-like accompaniment to the kora."
