"The organ was touched by the best finger of that age, Mr Orlando Gibbons." So exclaimed the French ambassador on entering Westminster Abbey in 1624, a year before the composer's life was cut short. The precociously talented musician was the only English virginalist to hold a position as virginal player at court alongside organist posts. The Temple Church's Director of Music, Thomas Allery, surveys this dual aspect of Gibbons' keyboard music across two concerts, performing on organ and harpschord at both.
